Internal Carving in Quartz Crystal

Less than 1/100th of one percent of all the quartz crystal mined qualifies for internal carvings. The crystal is selected from a rare group of clear quartz that may contain black tourmaline needles, rutile needles (amber in color), or chlorite inclusion. These inclusions, trapped in the quartz millions of years ago, incite the imagination with their delicate, intriguing patterns. Using a microscope and a diamond engraving needle, the master carver painstakingly carves the design into the underside of the crystal. One carving can take from three days to up to three months to complete. Internal carving is one of the most difficult of the mineral carving techniques to master, requiring a minimum of ten years training and apprenticeship.
